China wants to punish piracy
China blames the population on the internet for the fact that they are responsible for making the
country likely the world’s largest nation in terms of not only population but also pirated copyrighted materials. This proposition is questionable. Nevertheless the Chinese government want to tackle the piracy with high penalties.
Yan Xiaohong, deputy head of the National Copyright Administration, said: “As the situation is so serious we ought to give out heavier fines under the legal framework.” This could result in higher financial penalties and harsher sentences.
With 210 million internet users in 2007, China was second only the US where more online. According to the China’s Xinhua news agency they will become the largest online population in 2008.
